While all of my newsletters so far have been on the subject of how to train better in order to improve health, I’m sure all of you are aware that - without the proper diet - you will struggle to see results, if any at all! That’s why, in addition to teaching you how to train the right way, I’ve decided to include education and guidelines on how to eat properly so that you will not only achieve your fitness goals, but live longer as well. For those who are unaware, the concept of gaining or losing weight is fairly simple. If you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in and if you want to gain weight, you need to eat more than you burn off. Given that we are currently in an obesity epidemic in America, few have issues with consuming more calories than they burn off. That considered, most of my topics on nutrition will be catered to weight loss or body recomposition. Even for those who are successful in weight loss and improving fitness by burning more than they consume, many still have issues with reducing things like blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, which is what actually improves health and longevity. At the end of the day, that’s why we’re putting in all of this hard work - to live longer and feel better, right? Not so fun fact - hundreds of thousands of Americans unnecessarily every year, much sooner (potentially decades) than they need to due to high blood pressure, which is something that 1 in 3 Americans experiences. YES - ONE IN THREE!! And it’s primarily due to the choice of what we decide to eat on a day to day basis. A few lifestyle changes can reverse this for you and your family. I’ll discuss this in more detail to come, but what causes high blood pressure? Too much sodium (salt). 90% of Americans 2 years old or older consume more than 1.5x the recommended daily salt intake…. Bottom line - it doesn’t matter how much you workout if you aren’t eating the proper type and amounts of food. You will not lose weight and you will not develop a healthier body unless you become educated, aware and intentional about what you put into your body. My first tip to you is to KNOW WHERE YOU STAND. Go to the doctor and get your bloodwork/hormone testing done. Not in 6 months, not in a year - call your doctor (or book an appointment very easily via Zocdoc) and get this done as soon as possible. From there, we can develop a plan of how to get you well on your way.
